The AlcoScan AL5000 Digital
Professional alcohol breath
analyzer is a U.S. DOT approved precision alcohol
detection instrument which employs an advanced integrated
*MEMS microchip gas sensor to determine equivalent blood alcohol content within a range of
0.00% to
0.40% in increments of
.01% from a measured breath sample with a sensor accuracy rate of +/-
0.01% at 0.10% BAC. Results are displayed digitally. Easy and convenient to use,
this professional portable model is
recommended for both personal and law enforcement field use when high
performance and accuracy of results is indicated. Additionally the AlcoScan 5000 is ideally suited for zero tolerance alcohol testing
programs where even the smallest amount of system alcohol can be detected. The
AL5000 model includes 8 specially designed non-disposable one-way mouthpieces
that prevent subject manipulation of breath sampling by "blow back" and insuring
proper breath sampling.
As with all electronic measuring devices, accurate results are significantly
impacted by failure to follow proper testing protocol and use instructions
included with the unit. Specifications and features of the AlcoScan AL5000 Digital
Pro model follows:
 |
*MEMS is the
abbreviation for Microelectro-Mechanical Systems, a technology developed at the
University of California at Berkley that employs miniscule silicon sensors or
"motes" a.k.a "Smart Dust". Smart Dust, as the name implies, is the equivalent
of coating a receptor microchip with micro fine powder consisting of millions of
individual smart sensor motes. The use of MEMS, or smart dust, exponentially
increases the sensitivity and detection effectiveness of the receptor microchip
in identifying and quantifying targeted molecules (hydrocarbons in the case of
alcohol breath analyzers). This increased sensitivity and accuracy however can
be more readily compromised by cigarette smoke or other contaminates in the air.
Therefore it is extremely important that MEMS devices be used as free from
ambient smoke as possible.

TESTING PROTOCOL
Important. Wait at least 10 minutes after
consuming alcohol or smoking before testing. This period is necessary for all
the alcohol molecules to be absorbed into the system preventing a high false
positive reading. Also, components of tobacco smoke can effect the accuracy of
BAC readings by interfering with the sensor microchip. It is also recommended to
perform the test in a smoke free environment. See
Technology and Accuracy.
1. Depress the power button to activate the
test unit. The unit is powered by two AA alkaline 1.5V batteries (included).
2. Place one of the eight mouthpieces (included) over the breath sample intake
tube.
3. The AlcoScan AL5000 will automatically begin a self test and sensor
calibration routine. The digital display will commence a numeric countdown
sequence indicating that purge cycles and circuit tests are taking place. Two
audible beeps, a RDY (ready) indicator on the display and 0 in the display
result panel indicate the unit is ready for breath sampling.
4. Take a deep breath and blow steadily and continuously for 2-3 seconds into
the mouthpiece or until two short beeps are heard. Note: Intermittent
blowing or blowing too long or too short will result in an "Flu" or
error message on the display.
Press the "Power" button to restart the test routine from the
beginning.
5. The AL5000 will then display the letter O moving right to left indicating the
sample is being processed.
6. After 10-15 seconds, the test result in percentage
BAC will be displayed indicating completion of the test.
7. The AL5000 will then power off automatically after 10 seconds.

Using the AlcoScan AL5000 is an economical and accurate way to avoid the many risks
associated with alcohol consumption. These risks are well publicized and can
lead to life threatening consequences not only for intoxicated individual but
also for other persons potentially affected by the
condition. Used as a monitor, the
AlcoTech Digital can indicate when equivalent blood alcohol
percentages are below or above state legal limits preventing potential arrest or
worse, reckless endangerment of others. This professional breath analyzer is recommended for "on the spot" testing whenever alcohol consumption
is planned or intoxication is suspected. With the exception of replacement of
the batteries, the AlcoTech Digital should provide accurate readings indefinitely as long
as the sensor is not damaged. Test protocol and use
instructions must be followed for accurate results.
For additional information on technology method and specificity expectation see
Technology and Accuracy. |

AVAILABILITY
Each AlcoScan AL5000 Professional Digital Breath Analyzer
comes boxed with eight reusable, non-disposable one-way mouthpieces, custom leather
pouch, carry strap, two AA 1.5 volt batteries and
complete operating instructions. For
sanitary reasons, it is recommended that each mouthpiece be used only by the
same person or be
washed in hot water or sterilized between uses. Note: The special mouthpiece must
be used for each test or damage could occur to the sensor microchip. Mouthpieces
are constructed of high grade ABS plastic and will last indefinitely.
